Kayla Thoughts

Flickr kinda-sorta launched the ability to upload videos today. I am still trying to figure out where I can upload a video. Maybe this lofty and sneaky announcement is designed to create a buzz. If so, it’s working.

Current comments around the web are mostly welcoming of the videos. But apparently you can only upload short clips which are (at maximum) 90 seconds long. Many see how good this is; short clips to accompany your photos here and there. (Who wants to watch your nephew eat ice cream for 30 minutes?) While others are questioning why there is a limit at all - they just don’t get it. Flickr is simplicity and anything they introduce will reflect that.

Some are even criticizing the look of their video player. C’mon, how many different ways can you rearrange buttons for playback? It’s crazy how some just dig and dig for bad things to say! How about the ones bringing that up draw up a few examples and post them. Hmm, for some reason that isn’t happening… I wonder why.

Others question why bring video in the photo world of Flickr. I think it’s a great way to increase exposure to your existing photostream. If you’re into that.

Thumbs up.

You can upload videos via the upload form for pictures. :-)

Wow I can’t even get to Flickr right now.. it’s timing out.

I figured Upload Photos would still mean photos.

I am so confused.

Now I see

“Choose photos and videos
Note: Videos are limited to 90 seconds in length, and 150MB in filesize. Learn more…”

Earlier my upload page didn’t say that. =(

I am really excited about this… the video player looks similar to one that I’ve seen on another website but you’re right… how many ways can you rearrange buttons. I think what really matters is how well the video player operates and from what little i’ve seen it’s clean and runs smoothly.

The time limitation is interesting. At first I thought that 90 seconds was pretty lame but then I began to realize the benefits. The more I think about it, it really seems as if Flickr intended for this all along, not that it’s a capacity issue. Having shorter films will force users to be as creative as possible in the time allotted. Of course there are going to be some people that aren’t going to put any effort into their videos and just upload like crazy but for the most part if the piece is intended for Flickr and the user knows that it can only be 90 seconds long… I think because of that we’re going to see higher quality submissions.

The 90 second rule will also probably help cut the uploading of copyrighted material. So all in all it seems like a good choice and I really can’t wait to see all these new videos popping up. Flickr already has a massive user base… I wonder how many of them will upload videos… and it will be awesome to see how if at all this affects YouTube’s Market Share in anyway.

Today as I’ve thought about this more, I have a suspicious feeling that Flickr video may even fade out a little in time… maybe a lot of videos will be uploaded right now but in the next six-months photos will be back into the main arena.

I don’t doubt that at all Kayla. I don’t believe Flickr is intending to be the new YouTube or even consider moving to video as their primary focus. In my opinion, the video champion (in terms of quality and professionalism) is Vimeo. I think Flickr is just trying to see if there’s a community of videographers within their existing one. Or… as it’s a Pro-only feature, maybe they’ve seen a slump in pro sign-ups/renewals.
